Research Highlights
• Total > 15 years of in the area of conventional breeding, molecular breeding (Marker-assisted and genomic selection), heterosis breeding, hybrid rice breeding, trait mapping, field rapid generation advance (FRGA), application of quantitative genetics, seed production (hybrid & inbred rice varieties), field trails, data analysis, report and manuscript writing and coordination of project activities with government and private stakeholders for delivering supporting solutions to end users, strengthening seed systems and the adoption of high yielding stress-tolerant rice varieties through different demonstrations, trainings, meetings and breeder and foundation seed linkage with private and government stakeholders and technical support for best management practices (BMPs), crop establishment methods and post-harvest technology.
• Mapped and developed mapping population of several economic important traits (restorer fertility, wide compatibility, stigma exsertion, drought tolerance, high-temperature tolerance, brown spot tolerance, aroma, Grain-Fe and Zn etc.) in rice
• Demonstrated molecular breeding experience in rice: Developed 40 introgression lines with biotic (blast, bacterial blight, gall midge, brown plant hopper) and abiotic (drought, cold and submergence tolerance) and developed 8 genetic stocks related to elongated uppermost internode trait, submergence tolerance trait, wide compatibility trait, stigma exsertion trait and combination of either of traits
• Identification of new donor for stigma exsertion trait, germination and seedling stage cold tolerance, reproductive stage drought and high-temperature tolerance
• Development of breeding lines tolerance to cold, drought and high-temperature traits
• Conducted and associated with hybrid rice trails and varietal trails for All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project (AICRIP) at ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad
• Conducted different varietal and hybrid trails for Hybrid Rice Development Consortium (HRDC) and conducted proof of concepts (high out-crossing) trial at IRRI-South Asia Hub, Hyderabad

Research Experience
(A) Modern Breeding for development of improved lines
• Marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) along with stringent phenotypic selection approach used for improvement of mega rice varieties and hybrid rice parental lines
• Developed and associated in introgression of drought tolerance, submergence tolerance, bacterial leaf blight resistance, blast resistance, gall midge tolerance and brown plant hopper tolerance traits mega rice variety Swarna
• Developed and associated in introgression of drought tolerance, bacterial leaf blight resistance, and blast resistance traits in popular rice variety Lalat
• Developed and associated in introgression of drought tolerance, cold tolerance, bacterial leaf blight resistance, and blast resistance traits popular rice variety Sahbhagidhan
• Developed and associated in introgression of drought tolerance, bacterial leaf blight resistance, blast resistance and gall midge resistance traits in high yielding rice variety Naveen
• The genetic stocks developed are IR 58025B (with eui gene), IR 58025B (with stigma exsertion trait), IR79156B (with stigma exsertion trait), IR 58025B (with submergence tolerance trait), IR58025B (with wide compatibility trait), IR 58025B (stack of eui and S5ngenes) and IR58025B (stack of eui and Sub1 genes)
(B) Trait mapping
• Using this exposure, I have developed F2, Backcross, Three-way population, Recombinant inbred lines and advanced backcross inbred lines for different genetic studies and mapping of agronomically important genes/QTLs with microsatellite markers
• Successfully developed the mapping populations for cold tolerance, drought tolerance, high-temperature tolerance, aroma and nutritional (Grain-Zn & Fe) traits in rice using the identified potential donors
(C) Classical breeding
• Planning and implementation of plant breeding experiments for the development of improved varieties/parental lines and hybrids with desired trait. Identification of maintainer and restorer lines for crop improvement. Development, evaluation and multiplication of CMS lines. Purification of parental lines (A, B & R). Hybrid rice seed production. EUI hybrid breeding. Germplasm maintenance and characterization
• Screening of rice germplasm and stable breeding lines for cold, drought and high-temperature tolerance and identified the suitable donors contributing to cold, drought and high-temperature tolerance
• Development of breeding lines possessing one or combination of traits (cold tolerance, drought tolerance, high-temperature tolerance, aroma and nutritional grain - Zn & Fe)
• Development of rice varieties for sustainable rice production under declining water and labor conditions by considering the universal problems of global warming. Screening of breeding lines for dry-directed seed rice (D-DSR), Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) and No-till farming (also called zero tillage or direct drilling) shall encourage farmers to adopt new standard practices for rice cultivation.
(D) Seed production
• Seed production depend on seed quality (germination%), site of seed production, weeding, roughing, followed standard agronomic practices and isolation distance from variety to variety is 3-5 meters but in hybrid seed production distance isolation is 100 meters, time isolation ≻21days and isolation barrier 2.5-3 meters in height
• Responsible for the maintenance breeding by maintaining panicle to row method for the >1000 germplasm lines at Barwale Foundation
• The certified seed was produced for all the mega varieties (MTU 1010, Sambha Mahsuri and IR64) (3.5-4 tons per hectare), 16 hybrid rice parental lines seed production (3.5-4 tons per hectare) at IRRI-SA Hub and seed production of Ranjit-Sub1, Bahadur-Sub1, Swarna-Sub1, BINA Dhan 11, DRR Dhan 44, BINA Dhan 17, BRRI Dhan 75, BRRI Dhan 69, CR Sugandh Dhan 909, Keteki Joha and Bokul Joha (3-4 tons per hectare), under Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART)
• The evaluation of advanced breeding lines and the hybrid lines were tested for agronomic traits. The hybrid pipelines were displayed for the demonstration to various members of Hybrid Rice Development Consortium (HRDC)
• Seed production of high outcrossing (HO) lines, new restores and maintainer lines as and when required
• The identified pipe lines from the various research programs, evaluated at multi locations by involving the farmers in the selection process
(E) Strengthening seed system and seed dissemination
• Breeder seed and foundation seed linkage of stress tolerant rice varieties between seed source in India and different seed system stakeholders in Assam
• Seed indent preparation and monitoring seed distribution for 18 district with Assam Agricultural University (17 KVKs, 5 RARSs and 1 HRS) and 26 district with Department of Agriculture in Assam
• Planning and conducted Mini-kit, On-farm adaptive demonstrations, Cluster demonstrations, Demonstrations through dealer network, Head-to-head demonstrations, Integrated crop management demonstration (ICMD), Learning Centre demonstration (LCD), Mechanical transplanting (MT) demonstration, Dry-Direct seeded rice (DSR), Wet-Direct seeded rice (DSR) and rice variety cafeteria under 18 district with AAU (17 KVKs, 5 RARSs and 1 HRS) and Mini-kit and rice variety cafeterias under 26 district under Department of Agriculture in Assam. These demonstration is helpful in acceptance of variety and its seed dissemination
• Training and meeting: Awareness creation about benefits of using quality seed. Improving quality of farm saved seeds for further multiplication. Developing avenues of seed entrepreneurship at village level. Strengthening informal seed system for decreasing demand and supply deficit. Engaging private Dealers/seed entrepreneurs in seed production and promotion of STRV’s. Creating awareness about STRV’s for private agro techs and linking formal and informal seed system of state. Awareness creation about STRV’s involving grass root stakeholders like progressive farmers, nongovernment organizations (NGO’s) and Farmer Producer Organization (FPO’s) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPC’s). To form a common platform for all stake holders in seed system for awareness creation, linkages and decision making
(F) Best management practices, crop establishment methods and mechanization
• Technical support for best management practices (BMPs) i.e. stress tolerant rice variety/ high-yielding rice variety/premium quality rice variety, line transplanting, seed cleaning, seed treatment, healthy nursery management, water (Alternate wetting and drying), nutrient and integrated pest management, integrated weed management and crop establishment methods (Dry-DSR, Wet-DSR and Mat type nursery transplanting) and post-harvest technology (Reaper, Combine harvester, Axial flow thresher/open drum thresher, Solar bubble dryer, Portable rice mill, hermetic storage (Super bag/Cocoon) under Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART)
(G) Field trails and Statistical analysis
• Conducted hybrid rice trails based on duration (Early <120 days, Medium (120-140 days) and Medium Slender (MS) grain type and also associated with varietal trails which is based on duration, grain type and situation based (DSR) and involved in compiling data for All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project (AICRIP)
• Conducted different demonstration and its analysis
• Analysis was done using CropStat or PBTools Software to know significant improvement in tested hybrid or varieties compared to (standard, zonal or local) checks in the situation
