Dr. Hossain is a professor of plant biotechnology in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology, University of Rajshahi. He has more than 23 years of direct teaching, research and extension experience in the specialty crops particularly fruits and vegetable improvement. He received more than dozen of research grants from various national grant providers from Bangladesh. He has been serving as editorial board member and reviewers of various plant science related journals. The new/emerging infectious diseases of plants are caused by viruses (47%), fungi (36%), and bacteria (16%). His research focuses on molecular characterization of pathogens, gene functions, traits discovery, disease diagnosis, plant-pathogen interaction and mechanisms of disease resistant. His target is the development of state-of-the art biotechnological approaches to develop genetically improved disease resistant fruits and vegetables, which can overcome the current challenges facing nowadays in the agriculture fields. #Dr. Hossain has developed several okra lines, which are resistant to yellow vein mosaic viruses. These lines are being utilized to generate high yielding hybrid okra varieties. His group also have been solely producing five varieties of tissue culture banana seedlings and disseminating among the banana growers throughout the country.
